Why is it important?
According to Rustamovna in 2023 , human organs and tissues of the oral cavity will be exposed to irritating, thermal, toxic and carcinogenic effects in the process of smoking. The relationship between smoking and specific health outcomes is fertile, meta-analyses, cohort studies and case–control studies results in the risk of outcomes such as lung cancer chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and ischemic heart disease due to smoking (Dai et al., 2022). Therefore, smokers’ life span is known to be average 10 years shorter than non-smokers’. Moreover, half of the smokers lose about 20 years of healthy life before dying because of smoke-related disease (Giulietti et al., 2020).
Research shows that
In 2023, 19.5% (4.8 million) of adults in Malaysia reported current tobacco use in any form (36.2% of men and 1.8% of women) (GATS, 2023).
And this is not including vaping, shisha and any other tabacco usage.
This pie charts shows the percentage of men and women who smokes cigarettes within the 19% of adults who smokes.

Personal Observation
That is why, even though the number of smokers have dropped through out the years, it is still an urgent matter to be addressed as there is still a huge number of smokers in Malaysia. With all the new "smoking trends" coming up, for example, vaping, it is my goal to raise awareness on the harms of smoking to prevent more of our fellow Malaysian to fall into this one trip pony route down the addiction of tobacco products.
