Part 2 : Visualise & Develop Concept

Reasoning

I have had a grandma and uncle who are addicted to smoking and they both passed due to lung cancers and heart disease, so I understand the dangers and harms smoking does to one’s body and health. It is also bad for those who are around you as secondhand smoke also affects them! I’ve always had weak lungs and nose allergies, so I often get ill whenever they smoke around me. Therefore, I wanted to do something about this topic to raise awareness in a lighthearted way.

Yep, that's them.

Moodboard

I want the poster to consist vibe of the retro Malaysian flyers and hand sketch illustration style for the visuals. Bold Fonts are also considered to be the best match for this type of poster style. Therefore, I built this moodboard to make sure the art direction is aligned.

Concept

As shown below, most of the anti-smoking awareness posters are usually in dull colors, serious tone and very formal. I wanted to break the norm by creating a poster that brings brightness to this topic, and make it shine with a hint of Malaysian humor. With this poster, I aim to stir in freshness and show the public how anti-smoking can be casual, easy and fun even though it is a heavy topic.

Title

Jangan Smoke Smoke

Inspired by Malaysia’s common tease, “Jangan main main”, it is to put in a sense of humor and catchiness to the title of the anti-smoking awareness poster to obtain attention of the usually un-serious, humorous Malaysian audience! It is also to localize the thought to make the audience felt more connected to this serious topic.

Subtitle

"Every cigarette is one step closer to death."

I've chosen this subtitle as it is very straight forward and simple to understand for the audience to know the danger of smoking! It also gives the audience some space to imagine and grow curiosity about how smoking can harm them until the point of them, driving them to check the details out.

Call To Action

"Stop Now."

Again, simple, straight forward and clear CTA for the audience to follow, and it adds a sense of urgency to the matter while supporting the subtitle.

Colour Scheme

The colors red, blue, and yellow have been selected to symbolize the Malaysian national flag. Red and yellow are colours that draw the greatest attention while they also represent caution, danger, and awareness. In contrast, blue was selected as the complimentary colour because it creates contrast, which makes the red and yellow stand out more. In addition, based on my observations, the majority of cigarette packaging is in red and blue (at least in Malaysia), therefore, I have chosen these colors that would compliment the poster's message the most.

Fun Fact

As a non-smoker, I've received feedback about how the hand placement doesn't look realistic enough so I had my friend be my model for me to sketch the way smokers hold cigarettes because I was struggling to capture the essence of it.
